listed below are from the 1997-2004 model years of the iconic Chevrolet sports car. In 1997, Chevrolet introduced a completely overhauled Corvette. The fifth generation Corvette responded to customer desires and delivered a Corvette with a smoother ride, better handling, better performance, and a roomier passenger compartment, while maintaining the Corvette's stylish mystique.
Perhaps the change with the most impact on the
C5 Corvette was the rear-mounted transmission and drivetrain tunnel, which resulted in an almost 50/50 weight distribution between front and rear axles. This change provided the improved handling, reduced noise and vibration, larger interior space and increased cargo space customers were looking for. Changes in manufacturing gave way to the use of hydroformed side rails, a single part in place of the 14 used on previous models.
The C5 Corvette also introduced the LS1 engine, GM's first engine with Electronic Throttle Control (ETC). The 2001 model year saw the return of the Z06 model.
A total of 248,715 C5 Corvettes were produced.
